Congratulations to Sharon McCartney on her latest book of poetry Hard Ass which was published by Palimpsest Press this spring.

Poems from this collection appeared in Issue 4 of The Rusty Toque.

Description from the publisher:
Hard Ass is a daring and bold collection of poetry, filled with passion and anger. McCartney skillfully hones her craft, yet the poet’s confessional voice feels raw and honest as if she merely purged her words onto the page. Using weightlifting as a metaphor to explore the poet’s inner world and her romantic attachments, McCartney both reinforces and undermines the transcendence of love.

Sharon McCartney is the author of For and Against (2010, Goose Lane Editions), The Love Song of Laura Ingalls Wilder (2007, Nightwood Editions), Karenin Sings the Blues (2003, Goose Lane Editions) and Under the Abdominal Wall (1999, Anvil Press). Hard Ass, a new collection of poetry, is forthcoming from Palimpsest Press in Spring 2013. In 2008, she received the Acorn/Plantos People's Prize for poetry for The Love Song of Laura Ingalls Wilder. She lives in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Congratulations to The Rusty Toque contributor Adrienne Barrett on the publication of her first book The house is still standing (Goose Lane - ice house, 2013).

We published some poems from this collection in Issue 3.

Adrienne is launching her book in Woodstock on May 30 and in Toronto at the Victory Cafe, June 15.

Description from the publisher:
The house is still standing is peopled with charlatans, gingerbread men, children, and savants — the thousands and the particular. Adrienne Barrett builds this nimble first collection with a supple craft. The poems deke and swerve, from the wry to the theatrical to the intimate. Whether riffing on the secret identities of public intellectuals and pop icons or penning elegiac verse, Barrett’s voice is strong, anchored, inviting. Although she takes her readers through both “substance / and its downfall,” in the end, the structure is sound; she is holding it up.

Adrienne Barrett is a writer and bricklayer. A graduate of Trent University and the University of British Columbia, she has seen her poetry published in Arc, Prairie Fire, and The Fiddlehead. Her work has also appeared on the longlist for the 2011 Montreal Prize. Born in Hamilton, she kicked around Peterborough, Vancouver, and Toronto before settling in Woodstock, Ontario.

Congratulations to Rusty Toque contributor Suzanne Sutherland on her debut novel When We Were Good published May 2013 by Sumach Press.

Susanne's short story "Going to a Party in Your Mid-Twenties" appeared in Issue 3 of The Rusty Toque.

Description from the publisher:
The year 2000 isn’t starting out too well for Toronto high school senior Katherine Boatman. Not only has her oldest friend ditched her for yet another boyfriend, her beloved grandmother died on New Year’s Eve leaving a void of goodness in her life that Katherine’s not sure how to fill. While overwhelmed with sadness and self-doubt, Katherine unexpectedly finds new love, both for Toronto's underground music scene and for her would-be saviour: a straight edge, loud mouth misfit named Marie. As Katherine seeks comfort in jagged guitars, mind-reading poets and honest conversations, she struggles to figure out not only what she and Marie might mean to each other, but also what it truly means to be good.

Suzanne Sutherland is a Toronto-based writer for children and adults. Her first book, When We Were Good—a young-adult novel about girls, guitars and the Bloor Viaduct—is published by Sumach Press in April. Her writing has appeared in various magazines and journals, including Descant, Steel Bananas and The Rusty Toque.  She is also a co-founder of the Toronto Zine Library, and works as an editorial assistant at Groundwood Books.

Congratulations to Rusty Toque contributor Andrew F. Sullivan on his debut collection of short stories All We Want is Everything published by Arbeiter Ring Publishing, 2013.

Andrew's short story "Hatchetman" was published in Issue 2 of The Rusty Toque, and it appears in his new collection.

Description from publisher:
All We Want is Everything, Andrew F. Sullivan’s exceptional debut collection of short stories, finds the misused and forgotten, the places in between, the borderlands on the edge of town where dead fields alternate with empty warehouses—places where men and women clutch tightly at whatever fragments remain. Motels are packed with human cargo, while parole is just another state of being. Christmas dinners become battlegrounds; truck cabs and bathroom stalls transform into warped confessionals; and stories are told and retold, held out by people stumbling towards one another in the dark.

Frightening, hilarious, filled with raging impotence and moments of embattled grace, All We Want is Everything is the advent of a tremendous new literary voice.

The Rusty Toque, now in its third issue, is churning some solid butter. And instead of having just the traditional poetry, fiction, and nonfiction categories, The Rusty Toque publishes comics, monologues, art, and even videos. There is room in this home for a lot of different work.

“Going to a Party in Your Mid-Twenties” by Suzanne Sutherland is a second person narrative in which you—you guessed it—go to a party: “Later, in the kitchen—you still haven’t found So And So, So And So’s roommate says they may have gone to a bar somewhere in the neighbourhood, but they’re not sure—you notice your date’s ears for the first time. It’s only your second date, and the bar where you went on your first date—another bar somewhere in the neighbourhood—was very, very dark.”
