CONVERSATIONS IN SILENCE

My work is an ongoing search for representational accuracy. It is a search for flaws and misunderstandings in social constructs and an examination of relationships. By recontextualizing and manipulating existing images, I discuss their shortcomings and turn the images on themselves, exposing an alternate point of view.

My work seeks to reach beyond, and acknowledge, the constructions that restrict our lives. It is a re-examination of everyday images, layered to reveal what lies beyond the original, or accepted content.

My art acts as a record of the world as I see it. To this end, I often use images and objects that already exist and manipulate them as a form of reclamation. Through subversion and reinterpretation I share my perspective and create the images that I want to see, the images that I feel are not there to begin with. By manipulating and recontextualizing images and objects, I redirect the ideas until they reflect a particular idea, experience or feeling.

The Rusty Toque would like to acknowledge the sacred land on which we operate. It has been a site of human activity for 15,000 years. This land is the territory of the Huron-Wendat and Petun First Nations, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. The territory was the subject of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy and Confederacy of the Ojibwe and allied nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. Today, the meeting place of Toronto is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work in the community, on this territory.
