My drawing practice is based on how I connect abstraction, intersectional identity, and materiality. With dense layers of finely hatched lines, various methods of erasure, and marks made from devising specific tools, the abstract images and forms I create are culminated out of an understanding of the physical act of their construction. The materiality of the works evoke the varied ways in which I relate to the contingency of fluctuating social realities. Historically an ephemeral practice most often associated with preparatory sketches for other media, I exploit drawing’s tradition of marginality and its limitless dimensions and modalities to navigate the intersectional aspect of my identity.
THEA YABUT'S recent exhibitions include Lines of Necessity at McIntosh Gallery and Live From Pattern Hut in collaboration with Anthea Black at Forest City Gallery in London, Ontario. She has participated in group exhibitions at The Art Gallery of Calgary, and TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary, AB. She holds an MFA from The University of Western Ontario and a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design. In January 2016 she will have a solo exhibition at Line Gallery (North Bay, ON), a space dedicated to Canadian contemporary drawing.
